The shape-memory Nitinol Coils are delivered straight into sub-segmental airways through a therapeutic bronchoscope and recover their double-loop shape upon deployment.
While other endoscopic treatment approaches focus only on reducing lung volume by blocking or collapsing parts of the emphysematous lung (atelectasis), the Coil treatment has a unique mechanism of action. The Coils are designed to:
- Compress diseased portions of the lung, which may improve elastic recoil
- Radially suspend and tether open surrounding airways, to reduce air trapping and hyperinflation
- Establish airway patency, preserving distal access and flow to distal parenchyma
When your patients with severe emphysema are experiencing worsening symptoms despite optimal medical, including drug therapy, supplemental oxygen, smoking cessation, and pulmonary rehabilitation, then they should be referred to a pulmonary center where they can be fully evaluated to confirm their candidacy for Coil treatment.
